The original Nepenthe was described in Homers’ The Odyssey as an ancient herbal drink so powerful that it eases grief and banishes sorrow.
The modern day Nepenthe (Nuh-pen-thee) started in 1994 when the Tweddell family purchased a premium property in the sub-region of Lenswood in the Adelaide Hills. The picturesque property, with an altitude exceeding 500m above sea level, was planted with premium, cool climate varieties. The inaugural Nepenthe vintage took place in 1997 and included the production of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
The quality and diversity of the grape supply is of paramount importance to maintain the standard of Nepenthe Wines. Each of the four estate vineyard offers a different terroir, producing grapes with distinctly, unique flavour profiles.
The Nepenthe winemaking team aims to reflect the pristine environment of the Adelaide Hills in the wines they produce by crafting the wine in small batches and utilising the blending options provided by the diverse range of estate vineyards.
The dedication to quality of the Nepenthe viticulture and winemaking was recently rewarded with trophies for both the Best Chardonnay in the world and the Best Australian Sauvignon Blanc under 10 pounds at the Decanter World Wine Awards.
